1984

My life expectancy was 24. Ii was expected to be strung out, incarcerated or dead by that age. I lived to become a B.A. film studies graduate of the university of pittsburgh (hail to pitt class of 96), an award winning published poetand a commissioned officer in the United States Army military intelligence corps and an MBA.
How?

Because I didn’t live in that world; I lived in a different world.

1984 was a pivotal year for me, not for any Orwellian reasons, but for a series of personal milestones and the planting of a seed.

  • JANUARY 1984: Student At The Art Institute Of Pittsburgh
  • FEBRUARY 1984: The Fantastic World of DC Collins airs on NBC – see above graphic.
  • JULY 198: Visited my family in my birthplace Richmond Virginia
  • JULY 22nd 1984: MY NINETEENTH BIRTHDAY
  • JULY 1984: PURPLE RAIN released birthday present I GOT TO SEE IT
  • AUGUST 1984: THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION RELEASED. I watched the TV special the Saturday before it was released.
  • AUGUST 1984: SHEENA QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE released saw it with my mom back in Pittsburgh and I learned the power of film.

It was after seeing this movie featuring a white actor, Tanya Roberts portrayed as a hero in Africa, for Africans, I realized how film can alter the perception of one’s own reality and self esteem. But more disturbing, was the look back on my own childhood heroic creations. They were all WHITE MALES & FEMALES I had created worlds where I didn’t exist.

It was time, time for something new, after the umpteenth Reboots of Golden Age Characters, Revivals of Silver Age Characters, Remakes of Bronze Age Characters, and Deconstructions and Reconstructions of Modern Age Characters. It was time to rethink the concepts, to reinvent genre.

It was time for, The Asaniverse, a focused portfolio of Comic Titles, told in self-contained story arcs , an interconnected universe where readers will know where to begin, starring a dissimilar cast of protagonists reflective of actual society and facing the challenges of our millennium –
